Walsall Borough Local Plan - Call for Sites LIVE

Walsall Council’s Call for Sites, which launched on 31.01.24, invites the public to submit their ideas and thoughts to the local authority to help shape the future of the borough through the Walsall Borough Local Plan.

This may include ideas for sites that could be suitable for new buildings, homes, jobs, community use - or land they would like to see protected.

Residents, businesses and landowners can submit their ideas via the Council’s online engagement platform Commonplace. By dropping a pin on an interactive map and suggesting a use for a site, people are encouraged to share any ideas, big or small, for derelict sites and vacant land in their communities.

The results from the call for sites will help to influence and inform plan preparation, so residents, businesses and landowners in Walsall are encouraged to take part.

“A call for sites will give us an opportunity to consider the proposals of local people when writing the local plan. We want people to put forward ideas, not just for land that can be developed into houses or employment uses, but we want ideas for community specific developments too.

We welcome all ideas big or small, including potential land for green spaces, nature conservation enhancement and other community uses. I’d also urge anyone that submitted a proposal under the previous Black Country Plan to please re-submit it on this next round."
Councillor Adrian Andrew, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Regeneration, Walsall Council.

Work on the Walsall Borough Local Plan will continue in place of the Black Country Plan which ceased production in October 2022.

Local Plans are key statutory documents that will shape the future of the borough through sites allocated for different types of employment, housing and public space. They show where the new homes and jobs that we need will be provided, and make sure these are in the best locations. They also protect open spaces and land for nature. Local plans, once they are adopted, form the basis of decisions on planning applications. The plan will also provide a framework to help enable regeneration, to attract investment into the borough.

The Walsall Borough local plan will support the overall council objectives, and the aims set out in the We Are Walsall 2040 partnership strategy, including supporting a dynamic and diverse economy and making Walsall a cleaner, greener borough.

Visit the Walsall Local Borough Plan Commonplace page and submit your ideas on the map.

Concerns over no improvements in Palfrey area

The decision-making process regarding the proposed developments are detailed in the report on the first page of the play area consultation and no sites in this locality were identified. Palfrey play area itself was improved in 2021 using £25,000 of grant funding and was not, therefore, identified for improvement by the council at this time.

Play improvements have been identified as a priority through local consultation as pat of the One Palfrey Big Local programme. Over the last 18 months draft designs have been drawn up for improvement works to three sites, namely: Bescot Crescent play area, Camden Street play area and Palfrey Park.

The proposals include:

Bescot Crescent - improvements include the addition of new play equipment and safety surfacing and refurbishing the existing fencing. Additional bin and benches will be added to the site, the footpath network extended, and tree and shrub planting carried out.

Camden Street - improvements to the play area include new play equipment and safety surfacing and refurbishing the existing fencing. Access to the sports arena will be enhanced and the surfacing improved, with new fencing sections and line marking for different sports. Additional bin and benches will be added to the site and some landscaping of the existing vegetation / mounds carried out to make better use of the space.

Palfrey Park - a new £20k Trim Trail has recently been installed as the first phase of work under the One Palfrey Big local project. Future proposals for Palfrey Park include extension of the play area to incorporate additional items of equipment, new site furniture including bins, benches and signage and soft landscaping including new tree and bulb planting.
